I fell in love with the euphonium back in the sixth grade. From the first note that I played on the instrument, I fell in love with the glorious tone. I knew early on that I wanted to spend the rest of my life making music with the euphonium. I went on to get my Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in Euphonium Performance from Lawrence University and UW Eau Claire.
In college, I started to do my own arrangements for euphonium tuba quartets. I took a composition and arranging course to help expand my knowledge and learn how to arrange pieces for concert band.
I auditioned for the President's Own Marine Band and U.S. Coast Guard Band in the 1990's, but did not make the finals. A few years later, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. For many years, arthritis took a toll on my body. I tried playing the euphonium several times, but my hands were too deformed and weak to fully push down the piston valves. Out of frustration, I quit even even trying to play. I went over twenty years without being able to play the euphonium. I really thought my music days were completely over.
In March of 2023, my father passed away. I started thinking of all of the musical memories that Dad and I shared through the years, and it really made me miss playing the euphonium. Dad took me to all of my music concerts and auditions through the years. He took me to the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium Competition four times in the 1990's. We spent the week at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, rehearsing, going to master classes and performances. They were some of the greatest memories of my life.
Dad's passing made me deeply miss playing the euphonium. I went to the local music store and tried playing the euphonium once again, but was still unsuccessful due to my arthritis. This time, however, I wasn’t going to give up. I started looking around online to see if the euphonium was ever made with rotary valves. Rotary valves have a much shorter distance to be pushed down, and my fingers can push the standard piston valves about half way down. I consulted with a musician friend of mine from UW Eau Claire about piston vs. rotary valves, and he also agreed that the rotary valves are easier to push down.
After searching online, I found a three valve rotary valve baritone over in Ukraine. I took a huge risk and ordered the rotary valve baritone, hoping I would be able to play again. Success! I am able to push down the rotary valves and can now play the euphonium again. I have to use both my left and right hands for pushing the valves down, but it works. I am currently a member of three music groups, and have been arranging for the groups as well.
I am so very blessed and thankful for being able to play the euphonium and perform and arrange music again.
